2 Charge your laptop's battery totally, if you are using one, and connect it to a wall outlet. If the battery for your laptop or iPhone dies during the software update, it could render the iPhone inoperable. If you are using any desktop computer, jump this step.

3 Launch iTunes. Delay for any instant to see if any window appears asking if you would like to update iTunes. If any alert comes upward informing you that an update for iTunes is available, click "Sure" to install it. Restart iTunes after the update is complete.

5 Click the icon representing the iPhone on the remaining side of the screen.

6 Click the "Update" button in the primary portion of the window, underneath the big iPhone picture. If one update remains available, a window will show up asking you to download it.

7 Read the window to see what fixes and new features are available in the iPhone software update, in that case click "Subsequent" to proceed along with the installation. Your iPhone will be updated with the most recent software.
